What’s the right way to take care of dry and dehydrated skin?

Dry and dehydrated skin is very difficult to care for. Many girls who have this type of complexion make mistakes and thus constantly complain about imperfections. Do you also belong to that group? If so, check out what care mistakes not to make, which cosmetics work best when washing your face and what to avoid.

Dry skin vs. dehydrated skin

At the beginning, it’s crucial to point out the differences between dry skin and dehydrated skin. First of all, the top layer of dry skin does not have the right amount of water and lipids, so it is neither moisturized nor lubricated. Dry skin very often experiences dehydration. The amount of water in the skin is small, and the damaged hydrolipid layer does not retain the right amount of water. Dehydration concerns the deeper layers of the skin. Care for both dry and dehydrated skin will consist in the restoration of the hydro-lipid barrier by hydrating the skin from outside as well as from the inside.

Mistakes in the care of dry and dehydrated skin

1. The use of cosmetics that have only occlusive effects

Yes, these are also important. However, to provide the skin with hydration, appropriate substances should be delivered to its deeper layers. The occlusive layer will be an obstacle because it will create a barrier on the surface of the face. You, however, must make sure to moisturize the complexion well. Therefore, use cosmetics rich in hyaluronic acid, aloe, lactic acid, vegetable extracts, urea and essential fatty acids. Only then use products forming occlusion with paraffin, wax, lanolin and non-drying oils.

2. Using coarse-grained exfoliating scrubs

Scrubs with thick abrasive particles can irritate the skin and damage its hydro-lipid layer. It is wrong to believe that the roughness and unevenness of the skin can be eliminated only by removing the top layer of the epidermis. As a matter of fact, it is enough to use a delicate enzymatic peel, and then moisturize and protect your skin against water loss.

3. Improper washing and toning

If you use cosmetics with detergents or alcohol content to wash and tone your dry and dehydrated skin, you do not even realize how serious mistake you’re making. Such products will irritate and dry the complexion even more. What’s more, they will cause roughness, remove lipids and disturb the natural pH of the skin. Foams or gels are best for washing the face followed by the use of hydrolates as toners. Their action is based on gentle cleansing, moisturizing and protection against harmful external factors.

4. Half-care

Do you sprinkle your face with thermal water or hydrolate after bathing and go to bed? Never do this again! Although these cosmetics have a moisturizing effect, they can dry out skin that lacks proper care. That is why it is so important to pat the product in with your fingers and then apply a moisturizing cosmetic. An effective way to moisturize the skin is to apply a cream, essence or serum to a moistened face and give yourself a gentle but firm, few-minute massage.

5. The influence of temperature, air, and sun on the skin condition

Dry and dehydrated skin is, undoubtedly, negatively affected by the hot bath, staying in air-conditioned rooms and long-term sunbathing without the use of a sunblock. Hot water leads to the dilation of blood vessels and contributes to the appearance of red spider veins as well as irritation and dryness of the complexion. Air-conditioning dries up the skin and reduces its moisture level. The situation can be improved by humidifiers and the use of moisturizing cosmetics during the day. The sun also has a negative impact on the skin. UV rays dry out, cause photoaging and contribute to the formation of wrinkles and discoloration.

6. Incorrect use of humectants and oils

Humectants bind water in the epidermis. However, in order to work properly, water should already be in the epidermis. Therefore, it’s best if the skin is sprayed with thermal water first. Then, apply a cream with one of the most popular humectants – hyaluronic acid. Only at the very end of the beauty care routine, you can use a product that creates an occlusive layer.

Using oils without other products can increase dryness and dehydration of the skin. Bear in mind that fats do not have a moisturizing, oiling and softening effect. Only the use of moisturizing cosmetics, then humectants and occlusive products will provide dry and dehydrated skin with proper care.
